the simhastha kumbh starts at trimbakeshwar on 31 october 2026 and runs to 2028. go before november or accept kumbh crowds — there is no third option, and any 2026 guide that does not say so is wasting your time. otherwise: grishneshwar is fifteen minutes from ellora, so not pairing them is a wasted trip, and bhimashankar has a 45-minute darshan blackout at 3pm that nobody flags.

every itinerary page bolts mehandipur balaji onto this circuit. it does not fit — mehandipur is 200km and five hours from khatu in the opposite direction from jaipur, and the one creator who actually drove all three needed two days starting from delhi at 6am. do khatu and salasar. they are 100km apart and 90% of salasar visitors do both anyway.

girnar's famous 9,999 steps is a religious number, not a count. the real breakdown is about 5,000 to ambaji and 8,000 to dattatreya, and every hundredth step to ambaji is painted with its number so you can audit it yourself. the ropeway ends at ambaji, not at the top — the dattatreya summit is still yours to climb.

two of the three headline temples on this route will not let you in if you are not hindu — puri under the 1955 act, lingaraj by long practice. both have a workaround nobody writes about: patitapavana at puri's lion's gate, and the viewing platform at lingaraj. and konark's main sanctum is sealed, so the temple you have seen in photographs is not one you can walk into.

banke bihari is the reason most people come and it is also the most dangerous crowd on this list — there has been a fatal crush here. go on a weekday morning, not on janmashtami or holi, and keep your wallet in a front pocket. the premanand maharaj padyatra darshan has changed route twice in 2026, so anything you read about its timings is probably already wrong.

the atmalinga story ties gokarna, idagunji and murudeshwar together, and driving them in that order is the legend in geographic sequence — which is a better reason to do this circuit than any of the temples individually. also worth knowing before you go: gokarna is a working pilgrimage town where people perform rites for the dead, and arriving from the beach in beachwear causes real offence.

three things about 2026 that most guides still have wrong. the pahalgam axis is closed for maintenance, so this is a baltal-only yatra. there are no helicopters — both axes were declared a no-flying zone from 1 july. and the ice lingam is effectively gone by early july; it measured about 7ft in late may and 90-99% melted by the 7th, five days into the yatra. third year running. go for the trek and the place, not the ice.
