every result on this search is a tour operator. here is the same yatra costed line by line, from rs 15,000 on buses to rs 2.29 lakh by helicopter.
tldr: the same four darshans cost between rs 15,000 and rs 2.29 lakh per person, and which end you land on is almost entirely a booking decision rather than a comfort one. registration is free. the kedarnath helicopter is rs 6,390 to rs 12,762 round trip at government rates, and roughly rs 7,900 to rs 15,460 once the irctc fee and gst land. a direct haridwar operator’s budget package is around rs 21,000 for 9n/10d; the same trip on a big booking platform is rs 58,000 to rs 65,000; the helicopter circuit is rs 2.26 to 2.29 lakh. the biggest single line item nobody quotes you is ponies and palkis, which are excluded from essentially every package. and the most expensive place to be hungry in india might be kedarnath, where rajma chawal was rs 280 in 2026.
why this post exists
search “char dham yatra cost” and read the results. every one of them is a tour operator, and a tour operator cannot publish an honest total, because the honest total includes the line “you do not need us.”
that is not a moral failing. it is structural. a page whose job is to convert a booking cannot also be the page that says the whole thing is doable on state buses for a fifth of the price, and it certainly cannot print the comparison table below.
so: this is the char dham yatra costed line by line, at every tier, with sources named and disagreements flagged. where a figure comes from a government notification i say so. where it comes from a traveller’s account i say that instead. where sources contradict each other i print both.

the awards
best value line item on the whole yatra: registration. free. covers all four dhams, produced in ten minutes on registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in, and legally required. 10/10, and people still pay agents for it.
best value bed: gmvn. government rest houses and tent colonies at every stop including kedarnath itself, priced where the private market would charge whatever it liked. 9/10, docked one point because gmvn does not publish a clean consolidated tariff and the booking windows open in stages.
best value transport: the ordinary bus out of haridwar. rs 550 to the kedarnath base, rs 700 to rs 800 all the way to badrinath, reported for 2026. 8.5/10. uncomfortable, leaves at 5am, and does more for your budget than any other single choice.
most honestly priced premium product: the kedarnath helicopter shuttle. rs 6,390 to rs 12,762 round trip, rate set by the state aviation authority, sold on an irctc portal with no negotiation. 9/10 for pricing transparency, separate from whether you should fly.
most overpriced thing on the circuit: the char dham helicopter package at rs 2.26 to 2.29 lakh. it works and it is real. it is also roughly fifteen times the road cost for the same four temples. 3/10 on value, and that is generous.
worst value per rupee, and it is not close: food at kedarnath. rs 280 rajma chawal, rs 100 water. 2/10, mitigated entirely by the free bhandara next to the temple and the rs 1 water atm, which is the actual answer.
the cost everyone forgets: ponies and palkis. excluded from essentially every package. a family of four doing kedarnath by pony adds rs 12,000 to rs 14,000 to a quoted price. the single biggest budget surprise on the yatra.

the single most useful line in this post: the do dham group tour at rs 44,485 to rs 47,070 covers kedarnath and badrinath, the two dhams that pilgrims doing it themselves consistently report finishing for rs 20,000 to rs 30,000 as a pair. that is not a small markup. that is more than double.

every one of those is zero for a private pilgrim. the only permit cost on this circuit sits with commercial vehicle operators, and it is already inside your package or taxi fare.

the delhi bus and train figures are widely reported budget-guide numbers rather than a notified fare. train fares in that band are consistent with sleeper and 3ac on the route.

on the sonprayag to gaurikund jeep: a 2026 video account quotes rs 50 for the 5km shuttle. a 2024 traveller’s account quotes rs 250 per person for the same ride. one of these is a subsidised shuttle rate and the other is what you pay when you take the first vehicle offered, or the rate simply moved. carry cash and ask at the stand. i am not going to smooth a five-fold discrepancy into a single confident number.
the scooter maths is worth spelling out. at roughly rs 1,100 a day for a hill-worthy scooter, two people sharing one machine brings the whole circuit’s transport down dramatically — one detailed 2026 breakdown puts a two-up scooter char dham at about rs 17,250 per person all in. solo on a rented scooter, it stops being cheap. and the risk is real: falling stones on these roads are routine, not exotic.

the kedarnath night is the outlier and it is the one to book earliest. gmvn tents and dorms need booking months ahead — gmvn’s own site was showing 2026 booking windows opening in tranches, with some properties bookable to 30 september and others to 15 january 2027, so the window depends on the property. if gmvn is gone, you are in the private market at kedarnath, and the private market at kedarnath knows exactly what it has. one traveller reported paying rs 3,000 for a room that had a geyser and smelled of stale water, which is a fair summary of the category.
a real budget lever nobody uses: the sitapur–rampur–phata belt, 10 to 15km short of sonprayag, has dormitories at rs 600 to 700 and family rooms at rs 2,000 to 2,500. sonprayag itself, being the actual base, charges more and runs out. stay one town back.
gmvn does not publish a single consolidated tariff sheet, and its live tariff pages are behind a bot check. the figures above are the ones that recur consistently across 2026 accounts. check gmvnonline.com for your property and dates.
the two treks
yamunotri, janki chatti to the temple, 6km each way. rates come from a government prepaid counter at janki chatti, and this is a place where published figures disagree sharply:

those are not reconcilable and i am not going to pretend they are. the low set reads like a notified base rate; the high set reads like what is actually being charged, possibly weight-banded. the 2023 traveller who hired a doli for his mother paid rs 6,000 and was told it goes to rs 8,000 on peak days. budget the high number and be pleased if it is the low one. use the prepaid counter, not the men outside it.
kedarnath, gaurikund to the temple, 16 to 17km. rates notified by the rudraprayag district administration:

the bhimbali trick is the best money-saver on this trail. if you can walk the first 6km to bhimbali and then take a pony for the remaining 10, you pay roughly rs 1,800 instead of rs 2,950 to rs 3,500 — and the 6km you walked is the gentler half.
and the number to internalise: a family of four taking ponies both ways at kedarnath is looking at rs 12,000 to rs 20,000 that is not in any package quote you have been given.

kedarnath specifics, reported for the 2026 season: rajma chawal rs 280, kadhi chawal rs 200, jeera aloo rs 180, idli sambar rs 180, water bottle rs 100. on the trail below, water was rs 50 at jungle chatti. at yamunotri in 2023, tea was rs 30, samosa rs 25 and water rs 50.
the two free options at kedarnath are not a footnote. there is a bhandara next to the temple serving free food, and a water atm charging rs 1. between them they can take your kedarnath food bill from rs 1,000 to almost nothing. carry a reusable bottle.
the honest framing on the markup: everything at kedarnath arrived on a mule or a man’s back up 16km. rs 100 water is extractive at the margin and structural at the base. i would call it out anyway, because rs 50 at jungle chatti and rs 100 at the top for the same bottle is a bigger jump than the extra distance justifies.
pujas, prasad and the rest
temple entry is free at all four. pujas are booked through the badrinath–kedarnath temple committee at badrinath-kedarnath.gov.in, and bktc publishes its rate card openly, which is more than most large temples in india manage.

for kedarnath, bktc puts its rate card behind a temple selector on the same page and it does not render for a plain reader. figures circulating for the 2026 kedarnath list include rudrabhishek at rs 7,500 and mahabhishek at rs 11,500, both for up to five persons. i could not pull those off the bktc portal itself, so treat them as indicative and confirm at the counter. i am flagging that rather than printing a number i cannot stand behind.
one more, from a 2026 kedarnath account: a rs 1,000 slip for garbhagriha darshan at around 2am. that is a widely described arrangement and it is not on any published rate card i could find. ask, and get a receipt.
prasad at kedarnath was described as a rs 100 minimum near the temple. tips are not optional in practice — budget rs 1,500 to rs 3,000 across a ten-day trip for drivers and hotel staff if you are on a package.

buy the shoes. rent the raincoat. the most repeated piece of advice from people who have walked to kedarnath is not to carry a raincoat from home when they are sold and rented at the base for a fraction of the hassle. the shoes are the opposite — this is 32km of round-trip descent on stone with mule traffic, and a traveller who did it in worn shoes finished the descent with damaged toenails.

what you are actually paying: bus timings on this route are not fixed, you will book beds on arrival, and day five is twelve hours on a bus rather than eight in a car. it is entirely doable and thousands do it. it is not restful.
the rs 35,000–40,000 yatra: two people, private car
this is what self-organising looks like when you refuse both the bus and the package.

that rs 37,000 figure is close to what a detailed 2026 breakdown lands on for exactly this configuration, and it is worth staring at, because a direct haridwar operator’s deluxe package is rs 30,000 for a broadly similar standard with hotels prebooked. the private car for two is the worst-value tier on this entire page. four people in the same car changes everything.
the rs 2.29 lakh yatra: helicopter
6d/5n, dehradun to dehradun, all four dhams. list price on a major booking platform in 2026 was rs 2,26,522 to rs 2,28,760 per person.
what you are buying: six days instead of eleven, no trekking at any dham, vip darshan handling, and the removal of the worst driving days on the circuit.
what you are not buying: any acclimatisation. phata to kedarnath is nine minutes and over 2,000m of altitude gain. for anyone with cardiac or respiratory history, the helicopter is the riskier option, not the safer one.
my honest read: this is the right product for a very specific buyer — money, no time, genuine mobility limitation. as a value proposition against rs 21,000 by road it is not defensible, and as a medical shortcut it is actively misleading.
what packages exclude, in every case
read this before you accept a quote.
- pony, palki, kandi and pitthu at yamunotri and kedarnath. the biggest one.
- the kedarnath helicopter, unless the package is explicitly a heli package.
- all pujas, aartis, bhog and prasad.
- tips to driver, guide and hotel staff.
- personal medicines, shopping, laundry.
- ac in hill sections — one direct operator lists it as a rs 2,000 add-on, because in the hills ac runs the engine harder.
- anything caused by weather, landslide or roadblock. extra nights on a stranded day are yours.
- entry to anything off-route you decide to add.
a rs 21,000 package for a family of four doing kedarnath by pony realistically lands at rs 27,000 to rs 30,000 a head by the time you get home. that is not a scam. it is just not the number on the page.
the scams and the soft extractions
registration for a fee. free on the state portal. anyone charging is charging for nothing.
helicopter tickets above the ucada rate. rs 6,390, rs 10,164 and rs 12,762 are the 2026 round-trip fares, plus rs 300 and gst. heliyatra.irctc.co.in only. irctc’s fare notification is public precisely so this cannot be negotiated.
the hotel that has your booking and then doesn’t. this one is real and it is specific to this route. offline bookings pay hotel owners better than online ones, and travellers report arriving with a confirmed booking to be told the hotel is overbooked. one team-bhp traveller watched exactly this play out on the street in uttarkashi across two nights of shouting between agents, guests and staff. book with a reputed property, keep the confirmation, and know that this is the single strongest argument for a package.
the unnamed puja price. ask the number before you agree. bktc publishes rates; anyone quoting off-card is freelancing.
the pony operator who is not at the prepaid counter. take the slip. photograph the licence and the operator’s phone number. the 2026 accounts are unanimous on this.
the verdict
value rating of the char dham yatra, done properly: 8.5/10. four himalayan shrines, ten days, free entry everywhere, free registration, government-capped rates on the two things that could gouge you hardest, and a genuinely good bed available for rs 600 in most towns on the route. by the standards of large indian pilgrimages, the cost architecture here is unusually fair.
value rating of how it is sold: 3/10. and that is the whole story of this page. the state does an honest job of pricing this yatra and then leaves the explaining to people whose income depends on you not understanding it.
the three decisions that move your total the most, in order:
- register yourself. free, ten minutes, and it is also the gateway to the helicopter portal.
- do not put two people in a private car. it is the worst tier on this page. four people or a package.
- book the kedarnath night early, on gmvn. it is the single most price-inelastic bed on the circuit and the private market knows it.
and one that moves nothing but matters: eat at the bhandara at kedarnath. it is free, it is there, and it is better than rs 280 rajma chawal.
