the cave shrine at 3,888m in the kashmir himalaya, open for about eight weeks a year. the most physically demanding yatra in india, and the one where the official shrine board is the only source worth trusting — registration is rs 150, ages are capped at 13 to 70, and the health certificate must be dated on or after 8 april 2026.

what they don't tell you

three things about 2026 that most guides still have wrong. the pahalgam axis is closed for maintenance, so this is a baltal-only yatra. there are no helicopters — both axes were declared a no-flying zone from 1 july. and the ice lingam is effectively gone by early july; it measured about 7ft in late may and 90-99% melted by the 7th, five days into the yatra. third year running. go for the trek and the place, not the ice.

baltal → domail → barari → sangam → cave (14km each way). pahalgam axis is closed in 2026.
